How to play Flying Roadster

Flying Roadster is a free 3D driving game set on a packed freeway at sunset: your silver electric roadster has cold-gas thrusters that lift it over the traffic in short bursts, and it can land on the roof of a car or a semi and drive along on top of it. Your goal is to get home as fast as you can for a gold, silver or bronze medal, scoring points for every trick on the way, before the hits you take wear the car down to nothing.

How to play

  1. Pick the day on the start screen with the arrows beside its name, then press Drive. Monday is 1.2 miles home; each day after it is a little longer, up to 3.1 miles, with heavier traffic and more lane closures. Finishing a day opens the next one.
  2. After a 3, 2, 1 you're already rolling at about 40 mph in the middle of the traffic. Hold the gas to speed up (to about 103 mph on an undamaged car); let go and the car coasts down, and the brake slows it hard.
  3. Steer between the lanes to get past the traffic. The cars in your lanes brake, bunch up and queue behind lane closures marked with cones and an arrow board. You can also hop the concrete barrier in the middle into the four oncoming lanes, where the traffic comes straight at you and won't slow down.
  4. Press hop to fire the thrusters: a tap lifts the car over a car, and holding the button keeps the thrust on for a moment, high enough to clear a truck or a semi. Each hop uses thrust from the THRUST meter under the car's health; it refills quickly while your wheels are down, and the tick on the meter shows how much a hop needs.
  5. Press hop again in the air for a barrel roll. Land it all the way round and you get a turbo boost for 2.5 seconds; land in the middle of it and you wipe out, losing speed and some of the car's health.
  6. Come down on the roof of a car, truck or semi going your way, with your car's middle over it, and your tyres grip it: it carries you along. Hold the gas to drive off the front, brake to slide off the back, or steer off a side. You can hop from a roof just as you can from the road. Oncoming cars' roofs just bounce you off.
  7. Every trick scores points: jumping over a vehicle (100 for a car, up to 400 for a semi), landing on a roof (300), each second on a roof (100), a clean barrel roll (500) and a near miss (50). Each trick before your wheels touch the road again raises a multiplier, ×2, ×3, up to ×5; the road, a crash or a wipeout resets it.
  8. Hits damage the car by how hard they are: a gentle bump costs a little, running into the back of a car fast costs a lot, and a head-on hit with oncoming traffic costs the most. At zero health the car breaks down and the day ends. Reach your exit for your time, your medal and your points.

Tips

  • A semi's roof is the longest and easiest to land on, and its 4-metre height needs a held hop. Once you're on it, coast: the truck carries you, the points tick up, and the multiplier from your landing applies to them.
  • Chain tricks without touching the road for the big multipliers: jump a car, land on a roof, hop to the next roof, and finish with a barrel roll as you come down. A barrel roll landed on a roof still gives its turbo.
  • Riding a slow truck scores points but costs time. Medals go by time only, so on a medal run, hop over the traffic rather than ride it.
  • Landing back on the roof you just hopped off doesn't score another landing, though riding it still scores by the second.
  • Watch for sign gantries and bridges when you hop: hitting one from below knocks you down and damages the car. The traffic itself is never tall enough to carry you into them.
  • The oncoming lanes are often emptier, but a head-on hit can take most of the car's health at once. Hop back over the barrier before the traffic gets thick.

Rush hour at sunset, a packed freeway, and a sleek silver electric roadster with cold-gas thrusters.

  • Drive it: hold the gas, brake, and weave through traffic that brakes, bunches up and queues behind lane closures. Cut into the oncoming lanes over the median barrier if you dare.
  • Hop it: fire the thrusters for a short burst of lift over a car, or hold them to clear a truck. The THRUST meter refills as you drive.
  • Roll it: press again in the air for a barrel roll. Land it clean for a turbo boost.
  • Ride it: come down on the roof of a car or a semi going your way and drive along on top of it. Gas to drive off the front, brake to slide off the back.
  • Score it: points for every car you jump, every roof you land on, every second on a roof, every clean barrel roll and every near miss, multiplied up to ×5 while you chain tricks before touching the road.
  • Get home: gold, silver and bronze times for every day of the week, each a longer drive in heavier traffic. Hits damage the car, more the harder you hit; at zero it breaks down.
  • Plays on phones (touch GAS, HOP and BRAKE buttons, drag to steer), keyboards and gamepads. A steady camera that never tilts or shakes.
