How to play Copperlight

Copperlight is a free 3D steampunk RPG you play in your browser: you make a hero in the town of Brasswick, dress a party of up to five from more than 400 hats, goggles, coats, boots, wings and trinkets, take jobs from the townsfolk and fight monsters and rogue machines in turn-based battles past the town gate. Your goal is to grow your party from two to five, learn perks from what you wear, raise your Renown from Newcomer to Toast of Brasswick and beat the Foundry Colossus in the Old Foundry.

Genre
3D steampunk role-playing game: dress-up, jobs and turn-based battles
Players
One player
Length
A battle takes about a minute, less on Auto at 2× speed, and a job takes a few battles. There's no set story or ending: three wild areas past the gate, levels up to 30, more than 400 outfit pieces to find, and the Foundry Colossus, which takes a few hours of play to be ready for.
Plays on
Phones, tablets and computers, in an up-to-date web browser with WebGL. Keyboard, mouse or touch; no gamepad. It works with a phone on its side, but plays best upright.
Progress
Saved automatically in this browser on this device as you play. Continue on the start screen shows your name, gold and where you are, and puts you back on the same spot. Beginning a new game replaces the old save; the save isn't sent anywhere, and a private window may not keep it.
Price
Free. No download and no account.

How to play

  1. Press New game on the start screen. Under Who are you?, choose hair, hair colour, eyes, skin and build (Face and Full zoom the preview, and Surprise me picks for you), keep or change the name the game suggests (the dice button rolls another) and press Begin. On a phone it comes in two steps: your look, then Next: name.
  2. You start in Brasswick with Tilly, a tinker who heals, plus 10 gold and 3 Tonics. Walk up to people to talk: some have a job for you (press Accept), the map (N) marks who has one, and the board at the Brass Ledger, the guild, always has a few more.
  3. Walk out through the town gate into Gatefield Meadows. Monsters roam there and come after you once they see you, but you walk faster than they chase, so you can get away; walk into a group to start a battle.
  4. Battles go turn by turn with no timer: the strip shows who acts now and next, and an arrow marks whose turn it is. Choose Attack, Skill (skills cost MP), Item, Defend or Flee, then a target; Auto lets everyone act on their own, and 2× speeds it up.
  5. A win pays gold and monster parts, sometimes drops a piece of clothing, a mod or a weapon, and gives everyone XP toward the next level, up to level 30. Back in town, hand in finished jobs for gold and Renown, and sell parts in any shop (the Curio Cabinet pays most) or keep them for jobs that ask for them.
  6. Walk up to a shop's counter and it opens. Move onto a piece and your character tries it on, press Mirror (or tap the character) for a close look, then press Buy & wear or Buy. Hatter & Lens sells hats and eyewear, Thimble & Thread coats, trousers, skirts and neckwear, Bootstrap & Buckle boots, gloves and belts, the Curio Cabinet back pieces and trinkets, Cogwright's Workshop weapons and mods, and the Alembic Apothecary battle items.
  7. Open the menu (Esc or the menu button) and choose Outfitter: pick a slot, move along the list to try each piece on, and choose one to wear it. Hire more of your party at the Gilded Gear, then head on to Rustwood and the Old Foundry, where the Foundry Colossus guards its lair.

Tips

  • Clothes don't change your stats: each piece teaches one perk, such as Keen Eye or Fire Ward, to whoever wears it in battles you win, and once its thread is full that character keeps the perk for good. A Common piece needs 80 thread, each win adds that battle's XP, and rarer pieces teach a stronger rank but need more.
  • Each outfit earns a Flair star for every rule it meets: Matched (5 or more worn pieces from one collection, such as Brass or Leather), Coordinated (4 or more pieces in no more than 3 colours) and Complete (8 or more of the 10 slots filled). Every star gives that character 3% more damage and speed, and their turns fill the party's Showstopper meter faster: when it's full, Showstopper (once a battle) hits every foe at once.
  • The Brass Ledger's board always has a fashion request, and on a new game it pays 120 gold and 10 Renown. One character has to wear the whole look, and each of their Flair stars adds 20% to the gold and 10% to the Renown.
  • Weapons and mods are the only gear with stats, and each needs a level: 1 for Common, 6 for Fine, 12 for Rare, 18 for Epic and 24 for Legendary. A Tesla Coil, Ember Cartridge, Frost Canister or Aether Crystal mod turns your attacks to volt, fire, frost or aether, and a hit on a weakness does half as much again; Clockwork Rats, for one, are weak to volt.
  • Hire Bram (650 gold), Vesper (1,000) and June (1,400) at the Gilded Gear. Each joins at your party's level, and everyone in the party gets the full XP from a win, even if they were knocked out.
  • Every battle starts with everyone at full HP and MP, so Tonics are for the middle of a fight. Losing carries the party back to Brasswick and costs a tenth of the gold you carry, and you can't flee a gilded monster or the Foundry Colossus: when one announces its big move, Defend (half damage until your next turn) or shield an ally with Tilly's Bolt Shield.

Recent updates

Version 1.0.0 · October 12, 2026

The first release of Copperlight, a 3D steampunk RPG with chibi heroes, where how you dress your party matters.

  • Make your hero in the creator, then walk into Brasswick: a steampunk town of shops, townsfolk and odd jobs.
  • Dress up: 404 outfit pieces to try on in the Outfitter and the Mirror, seen on your hero the moment you pick them. Clothes carry no stats: each piece teaches a perk while you wear it in battles you win, and that perk is yours to keep.
  • Flair: a matched, coordinated or complete outfit earns Flair stars, which charge the party's Showstopper. Collections of pieces pay rewards as you complete them.
  • Fight: turn-based battles against the monsters of the wilds beyond the gate, with a party of up to five. HP and MP come back in full after every win.
  • Gear up: 30 weapons and 43 mods are where the stats are, and your heroes level up from battles, up to level 30.
  • Jobs: the townsfolk have work for you, and the fashion jobs pay best.
  • A map (press N), and your game saves itself in your browser as you play.
  • Works on phones (with a touch joystick) and on computers with a keyboard and mouse.
